"Midsummer Night's Dream"

by Deborah Blair

(3 1/2" H x 7 1/2" diameter)

Materials:
7" wide x 6 1/2" tall D handle
1/4," 1/2" flat reed
#2 round reed
#6 round reed, dyed pink
1" ash, dyed pink
3/8" flat/oval
medium cane
pink and white ribbon
1 ceramic sitting fairy

Preparation:
Cut from 1/2" flat: 7 spokes - 20" long

Lay out the spokes in a circle, using the handle as the first spoke:

Using #2 round reed, twine around the base making a nice circle (first row approximately 3 1/2" across). Continue twining around the base until the twining reaches the handles. Upsett.

Weave:

1 row 1/2" flat (over the handle)
1 row 1/4" flat
1 row 1" ash - dyed pink
3 rows 1/4" flat

Fold and tuck outside spokes. Cut off inside spokes.

Use 3/8" flat/oval for the rim. Use #6 round reed, dyed pink, for rim filler. Lash with medium cane. For a decorative rim, make a loop around the #6 RR with the cane, before completing each "stitch" of the lashing

.

Glue pink and white ribbon in curls on the handle, with a bow at the rim on each side of the handle. Glue the fairy to the top of the handle. Paint a flower design on the ash strip.
