"Classic Round Basket"

by Deborah Blair

(10" diameter x 6" high)

Materials:
10" oak round notched handle
1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8" flat reed
1/2" flat/oval reed
#2 round reed
seagrass

Cut: 16 spokes from 5/8" flat - 28" long.

Lay out 8 spokes:

Using #2 round reed, twine 3 rows, making a nice circle. Punch up the base slightly.

Lay out the remaining 8 spokes consecutively and in between the first set of spokes.

Weave 4 rows with 1/4" flat (until about 9 1/2" across).

Begin to upsett on the 5th row of weaving (with the 1/4" flat). It helps to weave from the inside of the basket.

Weave 6 more rows (of 1/4" flat) or until the basket is 2" tall AND 10" across.

Weave:
1 row 1/2" - blue
1 row 1/4" - blue
1 row 1/4" - natural
1 row 1/4" - blue
1 row 1/4" - natural
1 row 1/4" - blue
1 row 1/4" - natural
1 row 1/4" - blue
1 row 1/2" - blue
3 rows 1/4"- natural
1 row 3/8" - natural

Fold and tuck outside spokes. Cut inside spokes. Insert handle tips.

Wrap rim with 1/2" flat/oval. Use blue seagrass for rim filler. Lash the rim with 1/4" flat.
